Centre Environmental Association (CEA)

The mission of the Centre Environmental Association is “to promote, develop, and maintain environmental sustainability in the Centre community through education, activism, and institutional change.” CEA was founded in 2012 after the merging of multiple long-standing environmentally concerned student organizations on Centre’s campus including EARTH, GROWS, and ECCO.

The Centre Environmental Association has three sub-committees, each dedicated to a different interests related to Centre’s campus sustainability: Sustainable Residence Life, Greenspace, and Waste Management. The CEA works closely with the Student Government Association, particularly the Campus Improvements Committee, and the Presidents Climate Commitment Advisory Committee. The group helps organize Green Week+, events surrounding days like Campus Sustainability Day, and the annual environmental film festival.

The CEA Sustainable Residence Life committee works closely with the Residence Life staff to promote awareness of how to life environmentally friendly in our residence halls, facilitating hall programs, designing posters, and helping to educate students.


President’s Sustainability Convocation

Lisa Abbott presented the President’s Sustainability Convocation, “Preparing Kentucky – and Ourselves -For A Carbon Constrained World” on April 21, 2015.  Ms. Abbott’s remarks are available here.

On April 21, 2016, Tom Fitzgerald, Director of Kentucky Resources Council and well-respected environmental lawyer, gave our President’s Sustainability Convocation, “Margaret Mead Was Right”.  A transcript of Mr. Fitzgerald’s presentation is available here.

GROWS: Campus organic garden

Affectionately called the Garden Research through Organic Ways of Sustainability (GROWS) project, the garden was planted in April 2010.

The garden is located behind the Cheek Emeritus House on campus. A rotation schedule is in place for student, faculty and staff volunteers to maintain the garden. Some of the products will be used in Sodexho (the College’s food service provider) recipes. This is managed by the CEA Greenspace committee.
