The minor focuses on the regions of West Africa and the American South since they have been the primary sites of interaction between North America and Africa.

Students examine African and African American peoples through a variety of disciplines including anthropology, government, history, literature, music, and sociology.

What are the similarities and differences of Africans and African Americans in terms of culture, music, politics, economics, race, literature, ethnicity, and gender? And what are the important historical and contemporary issues within the African continent and among African American peoples? These are just some of the big questions addressed by this minor.
