Essential Resources for Visual Resources — a more extensive list of web resources compiled by the University of Michigan
Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) — a thesaurus for thousands of artistic concepts and terms
Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) — a database of names and associated information (including administration, geographical features, art, and more) about historical and current places
Getty Union List of Artist’s Names (ULAN) — a database of bibliographical information for thousands of artists
Library of Congress Authorities — browse and view authority headings for subject, name, title and name/title combinations
Oxford Art Online (OAO) — access to all Oxford art references and publications, including Grove Art Online


Flickr Commons — search public photography archives through Flickr
Library of Congress American Memory — free collection documenting the American experience of history and creativity
New York Public Library Digital Gallery — free access to thousands of well-indexed images
WorldImages Kiosk — well-organized and extensive database of 100,000 images, global in coverage (though not the best quality)
