Campus United Way campaign finishes strong

When considering what differentiates Centre from other schools, many often point to the College’s strong sense of community—a guiding value that not only resonates with those on campus but also extends to the communities it serves. No other time of year is this better exemplified than during the annual campus campaign to benefit the Heart of Kentucky United Way (HKUW).

The Centre community once again provided a banner effort in support of this important cause, connecting on the theme of “thoughtful giving” throughout the November campaign. In total, the campus-wide contribution to HKUW will exceed $43,250 by the academic year’s end—another successful campaign realized by the leadership of a campus committee and a strong commitment on behalf of faculty, staff and students.

Sallie Bright, performing arts coordinator for the music and drama programs and chair of the Centre HKUW committee, reports that Centre employees, retirees and other campus fundraising activities collectively account for $38,288 of the total contribution, making it the third-most successful workplace campaign in recent years.

Centre’s Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity represented the student effort again this year by naming HKUW their chapter philanthropy with a $10,000 pledge in support of the cause. Members of the fraternity were particularly focused on raising money through their annual Favors Auction, which this year raised over $5,035, an all-time high for the event. That, along with other philanthropic efforts led by DKE, has put them well over halfway to their fundraising goal for the organization.

“I’m very impressed by the men of DKE and their dedication to this cause,” Bright says. “These guys are passionate and focused, and are a tremendous help to boosting Centre’s campaign efforts.”

DKE Philanthropy Chair Parker Lawson ’15 explains, for their chapter, the annual campaign is an important reminder of Centre’s commitment to community, reaffirming the need to make a difference for good, both on campus and beyond.

heart_kentucky_united_way“Students are privileged to be at Centre College, but many in our surrounding communities do not enjoy the same luxuries the College provides,” he says. “The opportunity to support an organization like the Heart of Kentucky United Way—to give back to others in need—is a no-brainer.”

Though happy for the success of this year’s campaign, those closely involved with the HKUW efforts are already looking ahead to making an even more concentrated effort next year.

“We would always like to see more faculty and staff participation,” Bright says. “While we certainly appreciate those 23 percent of Centre folks who are donating, we’d like to see giving extend campuswide.

“The act of giving itself counts more than the amount of giving,” she adds. “There are people now who may only give a few dollars, but they know that HKUW will maximize every donation to its full potential across the 30 agencies it serves in Boyle, Lincoln, Mercer and Garrard counties. At the end of the day, each and every donation—whether large or small—is helping to improve the lives of those around us in need. And truly that is what is important.”
