AN UPDATE ON THE COLLEGE CENTRE
Asbestos
One of the issues that frequently comes up when existing buildings are renovated is asbestos, a commonly used building material in the past.
Jerry Meyer, Centre director of facilities management and owner's representative on the construction project, and Andy Mays, Whittenberg Construction Company senior project manager, have made the following statement concerning asbestos that has been removed from Crounse and Sutcliffe thus far and additional asbestos that may be taken out as the project proceeds: "Before any asbestos was removed, we had an asbestos survey conducted by a state-licensed contractor to verify that our plans conformed with Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. All asbestos that has been removed from Crounse and Sutcliffe has been handled in accordance with EPA guidelines. This will be the case with additional asbestos that may be removed during the remainder of the project. All asbestos has been, and will be, removed exclusively by a contractor licensed by the state for the removal and disposal of this material."
Recent Activity/Information
CROUNSE
The basement is now under cover, and stud walls and electric are being installed for the space, as are the supply conduits for the rest of the building being served from this area.
Concrete floors are poured for the first and second floors; the third floor will possibly be poured next week if the weather holds.
The area way for the south side of the building is almost complete; the area way on west side is almost complete as well. These area ways will provide a passage that will allow large mechanical/electrical equipment to be brought into the building.
Compact shelving in the basement is almost complete. Books should be placed within the next few weeks, and this area will be opened for use.
SUTCLIFFE
Under-slab utilities are almost finished and steel drawings are approved; steel beams are being manufactured and should be shipped in part by the end of this month.
Plans are being made to close both gyms after the basketball season and start the remodeling. The performance gym will be gutted and completely remodeled. Roofing replacement is also being scheduled and should start in a few weeks and carry on through the early summer months. Bleachers are going to be removed from the Bowman Gym and relocated to the Boles Natatorium within the next few weeks. The remodeling in the Bowman Gym will include floor refinishing, painting, and lighting changes.
Where to find information on The College Centre
Information on the progress of The College Centre project will be provided throughout the school year. Look for student/faculty/staff e-mails, as well as information in Notesworthy and on the College's homepage.
THERE IS ALSO A SECTION OF THE COLLEGE'S WEB SITE DEVOTED TO THE COLLEGE CENTRE. Go to http://www.centre.edu/cc for an overview of the project, current pictures and a photo archive, floor plans, an archive of update messages, and more.
Your patience and cooperation is appreciated as work moves forward on this major enhancement of the academic and athletic/recreation facilities of the College.
