Dear Centre community members:

The College Centre—a state-of-the-art academic/athletic complex—will bring major benefits to members of the Centre community: the latest technology, enhanced access to research materials, great study areas, outstanding exercise and recreation facilities.

But like the “Field of Dreams,” first it has to be built.  The period of construction will require some changes in routine, some extra planning, and at times some mess and inconvenience.  These annoyances, however, will be worth it when The College Centre is complete in the fall of 2005, bringing the physical environment of the College to a new level of excellence.

Following is general information as well as specific information about the Crounse and Sutcliffe parts of the project to help you know what to expect and get off to a smooth start as the school year begins.  Throughout the year, look for e-mail and e-newsletter (Notesworthy) updates as construction progresses, or check www.centre.edu/cc for current photos and other College Centre information.

First, two major general issues: safety and parking.

Safety:
It is extremely important that all members of the College community stay out of restricted construction areas. It is dangerous and illegal to be in these prohibited zones, so please avoid all areas restricted by chain-link fences and/or signs.

Parking:
While a number of existing parking spaces will be lost during the construction process, the Public Safety Office is arranging to replace these spaces in other locations. (These will generally be farther from the center of campus than the spaces they temporarily replace.) The Public Safety Office is sending an e-mail to all students, faculty, and staff with detailed information regarding parking changes during the year.

Crounse information:
—The west side entrance, next to Young Hall, will be your entrance/exit to and from The Grace Doherty Library, Crounse classrooms, faculty offices, Instructional Resources, and the Bijou Theatre for the coming academic year.  This entrance may be crowded at times, so give yourself a few extra minutes to get where you need to go.
—Regular library hours of operation will be maintained during construction.
—Regular library services will be maintained during construction.
—If you need material from any of the 20,000 volumes of bound periodicals we have placed in storage during construction, please fill out a request form available at the Circulation and Reference Desks, and the library staff will retrieve the journal for you.  The courier service will run several times a week, as needed.  Be sure to allow yourself a little extra time for research projects.
—The 1st floor of Doherty Library will be closed for renovations for a portion of the academic year.  Instructional Resources and the Bijou will operate as usual.

Undoubtedly, the library will be somewhat cramped and crowded during construction, and some of the usual services may be interrupted or slowed down at times. The library staff asks for your patience and cooperation.  They will do everything they can to maintain library services and to meet your research needs.

Sutcliffe information:
—The Main Entrance to Sutcliffe will be from the south/east side doors near the turnstile to the football field; this entrance is clearly marked.
—The doors on the south/west side near the baseball field will be open for athletic teams only, from 3 p.m.-7 p.m.
—There will be ID checkers at both sites referenced above.
—The entrance to the Athletic Offices will be on the east side off of College St. across from the pool, and open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
—Normal hours of the building operation will be posted on the Athletics section of the Centre Web site and in Sutcliffe Center.
—Entrance to all athletic contests will be through the Main Entrance on the south/east side of Sutcliffe Center.

We hope this College Centre information is helpful as we begin an exciting, historic year in the life of the College. (At future Centre reunions, you will be able to point out that you were on hand when this exceptional facility was coming in to being.)

If you have questions, please feel free to ask library or athletic staff members, Public Safety, or other members of the Student Life Office.
