Centre named a “Best Buy” in 2017 Fiske Guide to Colleges
Centre College has been named a “Best Buy” in the annual Fiske Guide to Colleges list for 2017. One of 47 institutions total and among only 26 private colleges recognized in the guide, Centre continues to prove itself as a place where quality academics and affordability are a top priority.
The Fiske Guide to Colleges is widely regarded as one of the most trusted resources for prospective college students, offering comprehensive yet detailed insights about more than 320 institutions of higher education in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Centre earns its place on the “Best Buy” list because of the College’s notable merit scholarship programs and need-based financial aid. Three premier scholarship programs—the Grissom Scholars, Lincoln Scholars and Brown Fellows programs—offer Centre students “full-tuition plus” and “full-ride plus” opportunities. All told, 90 percent of first-year students at the College receive merit scholarships or financial aid.
The unique experiences and community Centre offers is highlighted in the Fiske Guide, which notes an “unparalleled closeness between students and faculty” at the College. Over half of Centre classes have fewer than 20 students, allowing professors to teach on a more personal level than at other institutions.
Collaboration between students and faculty are also highlighted by Fiske. As the Guide states, “‘With the focus on undergraduate students, Centre students have the opportunity to do research with professors as early as the summer after their freshman year.’” Students are guaranteed such research or internship experiences through the Centre Commitment, which also guarantees students the opportunity study abroad and the promise of earning a degree in four years.
The Fiske Guide also notes the importance of involvement outside the classroom for Centre students. “Centre’s small size offers ‘the ability to get involved and have a direct hand in making improvements,’ says a biology major” in the guide. More than 85 percent of Centre students strive to make a difference by participating in community service.
Centre receives accolades for its top-ranked study abroad program, with more than 85 percent of students participating in programs in such places as England, France, Mexico, China, Japan, Northern Ireland and Spain. Adding to Centre’s “Best Buy” status is the fact that studying abroad at Centre costs relatively the same as studying on campus.
As a whole, it is the range of opportunities offered to students at Centre—including a combination of top-tier academics at an affordable cost—that led the Fiske Guide to name the College one of its “Best Buys.” The addition of a strong community and unparalleled enrichment opportunities seal the deal. As one student is quoted as saying in the Guide, “‘The people and just the feel of the campus were what really won me over.’”
