The Centre College women’s golf team recently garnered national attention on a major news network.

CBS Sports featured the women’s golf team on its NCAA spring highlight show on Saturday, June 23. The team was featured for winning fourth place at the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships.

“It was such an honor to have our women’s golf team featured on CBS Sports,” says Head Coach Bruce Brown. “We are proud of how far our program has come and the coverage was just a bonus to our exposure in women’s golf.”

“I was very proud of the golf team this year. Being covered on CBS Sports was an exciting way to see the season wrap up,” says Whitney Miller ’13, captain of the golf team. “It makes us look forward and work harder leading up to this fall.”

Beyond its success at the NCAA Championships, the 2012 season was a highly successful one for the women on the Centre golf team. This season was the first time the team has ever won the SCAC Championship. Emily Bachert ’12 was named a first team All-American by the National Golf Coaches’ Association and was also selected as a Capital One Academic All-American.

Miller, who was named to the SCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, credits the underclassmen on the team as playing a major role in the team’s success.

“I am proud of all of us, but I am the most proud of our freshman from last year,” she says. “They brought so much talent to our team. We needed them and they helped us finish as well as we did.”

Brown, who was named SCAC Coach of the Year and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, had anticipated the NCAA Championships because of the strength of his players—and already looks forward to next season.

“The 2012 NCAA Golf Championship was so exciting this year because we knew we had an opportunity to actually compete for a championship,” Brown says. “This was our third straight year and this was our strongest team ever. We stayed competitive the entire tournament and this really gave our two freshmen a great experience as we strive to return.”
