DEKE and UW PSAll 10 of Centre College’s Greek organizations are highly involved in the community and strive to give back through their outreach, service and philanthropy efforts. Most recently, Centre’s Iota chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) presented Heart of Kentucky United Way with a check totaling $11, 794.67.

Heart of Kentucky United Way (HKUW) is a nonprofit organization focused on making a lasting impact on education, income and health in the community by supporting more than 60 programs in Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties.

DKE has organized six philanthropy events over the past year to benefit HKUW, including a campus-wide penny war, the United Way Favors Auction, a Leapfrog-A-Thon to the state capitol and last Friday’s Lion Chili Cook-Off, during which the men of DKE presented the total donation to HKUW’s executive director Stephanie Blevins (pictured above).

According to Tanner Lyons ’16, philanthropy chair for DKE, the chapter’s support of HKUW is their way of showing their appreciation and gratitude for Danville.

“The fraternity views the entire Danville community, not just the Centre community, as their home away from home for at least four years,” explains Lyons. “As a chapter, we recognize the need to give back to such a great community and try to make it a better place to live for future students and the residents of Danville.”

Kathy Miles, HKUW board member and director of counseling services at Centre, remains impressed by DKE and their commitment to doing good in the community.

“Heart of Kentucky United Way is extremely blessed to have the dedication and passion for positive change in the members of DKE,” she says. “They have recognized the real and lasting difference that United Way’s community partners are making in the lives of area families.”

Jordan Shewmaker ’14 serves as resource development director at HKUW and adds that DKE’s contribution is an investment in the Danville community that is sure to have a long-term impact.

“The men of DKE exemplify what it means to ‘Live United,’ the mission of United Way, and local individuals and families enjoy an increased quality of life thanks to their efforts,” he says.

The men of DKE will continue to support HKUW and have set an even higher contribution goal for the upcoming campaign.
