Centre College Emeritus Faculty
Carol Bastian• Jobson Professor Emerita of English
Carol Bastian retired from the Centre College faculty in 1999 as the Alfred P. and Katherine B. Jobson Professor of English. In honor of her distinguished record of teaching at the College, she was the first person named to this professorship after it was created in 1996. Respected by her peers, she also was elected as Centre's first faculty president.
Appointed to the Centre faculty in 1976, Bastian regularly taught courses in British literature, concentrating on the 18th- and 19th-centuries, and in expository writing. She also taught in Centre's freshman humanities program, which has been recognized nationally as a model for other colleges to emulate.
Bastian's scholarly activities include the study of letter writing in the 18th- and 19th-centuries as both an art and a biographical source.
From 1987 to 1989, Bastian served as chairman of the humanities division at Centre.
