Matthew Pierce joined the Centre College faculty in 2011 as visiting instructor of religion.

Pierce has extensive experience in the Middle East and Central Asia and has lived in Egypt, Yemen, and Iran. He specializes in pre-Modern Islamic history and thought. His current research focuses on medieval Arabic and Persian biographies, analyzing the production of cultural symbols related to gender, authority, and identity.

He earned a B.A.in Biblical studies from Bryan College; received a Fulbright Fellowship (2002-2003) to research Qur’anic religious education in Sana'a, Yemen; and is currently a doctoral candidate in Boston University’s division of religious and theological studies.
