Charles G. Vahlkamp• Professor Emeritus of French
Charles Vahlkamp is professor emeritus of French at Centre College. He has taught at Centre since 1967. He has lived and studied extensively in France, serving for a year as residential director for Centre's overseas program in Strasbourg. He also has led five travel-study programs in France for Centre students.
During the year that Vahlkamp directed the program in Strasbourg, his wife, Sarah, a middle-school librarian, coordinated arrangements for middle-school students from Danville to visit France for brief homestays and touring.
Well versed in French history and culture, Professor Vahlkamp is the author of scholarly studies on Voltaire published in Romance Notes and in Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century. He also teaches courses in film history and criticism.
In addition to his academic interests, Vahlkamp has held various leadership posts at Centre. He was one of only two faculty members from NCAA Division III colleges elected to serve on the eight-member executive committee of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association).
Vahlkamp received bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Vanderbilt University.
