CENTRE ASSOCIATE OF THE YEAR FOR 1999
PAUL W. CHELLGREN
Centre College’s Statement of Purpose proclaims that its “highest priority is to prepare its students for lives of learning, leadership, and service.” The 1999 Centre Associate of the Year embodies the spirit of that mission personally, professionally, and in his civic life.
Paul W. Chellgren, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Ashland Inc., is a leader in the business community of this state and nation. Moreover, the company he leads is not only one of Kentucky’s largest and most successful business enterprises, but it is also one of the Commonwealth’s best corporate citizens. While Ashland Inc.’s strong corporate citizenship is one of the fruits of his labor and leadership, Paul Chellgren’s efforts to enhance the quality of life for all Kentuckians do not stop at the office door. Rather, he gives generously of his time, talent, and resources in support of education, the arts, and economic development.
Mr. Chellgren holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University, and a Diploma in Developmental Economics from Oxford University. In addition to the Centre College Board of Trustees, he serves on the governing boards of the University of Kentucky, the Marshall University Foundation, and the Foundation for the Tri-State Community. Also, he is Vice Chairman of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, a Director and Secretary/Treasurer of American Friends of University College, Oxford, Inc., and Chairman of Leadership Tri-State.
In grateful recognition of his steadfast commitment to a life of learning, leadership, and service, and in appreciation for the contribution he makes to the quality of life in Kentucky, Centre College is pleased to recognize Paul W. Chellgren as its 1999 Centre Associate of the Year.
