Centre Associate of the Year 2013
HUGH G. HINES, JR.
More than two millennia ago, Aristotle observed that, "We are what we repeatedly do." Elaborating on this observation, he went on to say, "Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." We may conclude from this ancient wisdom that a life worthy of acclaim is marked by a well-established pattern of excellence.
In choosing a person to recognize as our Centre Associate of the Year, we look for an individual whose record of professional achievement, civic engagement, and service to Centre may appropriately be called excellent. And in this year's honoree, Hugh G. Hines, Jr., we have again identified such a person.
Hugh Hines has served his college, community, country, and profession with distinction. Following graduation from Centre in 1960, Hugh enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School, he was assigned to destroyer duty with the Atlantic Fleet. During his years in the Navy, he served as an Engineering, Operations, and Executive Officer.
Hugh often says that, having married Marjorie Herndon '63, there was no doubt where he and his bride would live after he left active duty. They returned to Kentucky and soon thereafter, Hugh opened the Danville office of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. While representing Northwestern has been his principal occupation in the years since, he has been a director or partner in a number of other businesses, including: Fine Prints Marketing, Kennington Associates, the Todd Organization, Top o' the Mornin' Group, Executive Benefit Specialists of Kentucky LLC, and M & H Riverside Farm. Additionally, he has served as president of the Kentucky Life Underwriters Association and has been an instructor in the insurance program at EKU.
Within the community, Hugh has served on the local board of the American Red Cross and the Central Kentucky Cancer Board. He has also served as a trustee of Ephraim McDowell Health and as a chairman of the Ephraim McDowell Health Foundation. A golf enthusiast, he has served as president of the Kentucky Golf Association and as a committee member of the United States Golf Association.
Regarding his service to Centre, Hugh has pretty much done it all. He has been president of the Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Trustees, and a member of the President's Advisory Council. Most recently, he chaired the fundraising committee for the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate.
In grateful recognition of the pattern of excellence that characterizes his professional achievements, his service to community and nation, and his support of the work and mission of Centre College, we are pleased to recognize Hugh G. Hines, Jr. as the Centre Associate of the Year for 2013.
