Centre Fund-raising Campaign Surpasses Goal by More Than $10 Million: Gifts and Pledges Now Total $130.5 million

RELEASED: October 20, 2006

DANVILLE, KY—Randy Kell '69, chair of Centre College's Campaign for A More Perfect Centre , has announced that gifts and pledges now exceed the fund-raising effort's goal of $120 million by more than $10 million. More than 14 months remain in the Campaign, which is scheduled to conclude in December 2007.

Kell hopes this early success will enable the Campaign to inspire momentum that will lead to a spectacular conclusion. "Each generation of Centre alumni and friends is challenged to take the College to the proverbial next level," he said. "Few generations have had such a magnificent opportunity to do just that. It's going to be exciting to see how far this effort can go."

Commenting on the Campaign's progress, Centre President John Roush said, "This is a marvelous achievement, and everyone who has made a gift or pledge to the Campaign can take justifiable pride in its success. Because we are not yet halfway through the regional phase of the effort, however, many of the College's alumni and friends have not yet been asked to make a commitment to the Campaign. When everyone has been given an opportunity to participate, we will have an even better sense of how Centre's alumni and friends define fund-raising success for the College."

Though the Campaign has already surpassed its cumulative goal, several key funding priorities have yet to be met.

Richard Trollinger, vice president for college relations, said that while the goals of some funding priorities have been surpassed, other priorities are short of the goals set for them. Citing two key examples, Trollinger said, "This Campaign will not be fully successful unless it generates $35 million in new endowment for student scholarships and $14 million in endowment for faculty support."

Reflecting on Centre's ambition to further enhance its leadership role in education both in Kentucky and the nation, Board of Trustees chair J. David Grissom '60 quoted Henry David Thoreau: "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." Grissom concluded, "Our challenge is to continue advancing confidently in the direction of our dreams for Centre College."
