New DEKES are coming
The four fraternities and
four sororities that are on campus play a big role in Centre's social scene.
The parties on the weekends are hosted by the fraternities, and a lot of events
on campus are created by sororities. Originally there were six fraternities,
but two got suspended a couple years ago. Since then the college didn't allow
the revival of one of these fraternities—until now.
A group of mostly freshmen
guys, including me, are trying to resurrect the Delta Kappa Epsilon chapter
which was withdrawn in 2002. Centre gave the "DEKES" the opportunity
to bring their chapter back on campus if there were 25 guys willing to commit
to the fraternity. After a brief time of laborious recruiting, the guys were assembled
and the pledging started. The "DEKES" are back.
Personally, I'm really glad
that I'm a part of this unique event. Besides that fact that it's a once in a
lifetime opportunity (i.e. being a founding father of a revamped fraternity),
the group of brothers is such an awesome bunch. Although the group exists of a
lot of different people with different backgrounds, there are close friendships
between all the members. We're not just a bunch of guys who want to have their
own organization—we're friends who want to have a unique experience that
no one can take away from us.
In the meantime, I'm
currently in the process of pledging. Pledging can be a tough period, but also
a time that creates lasting memories. I've gotten to know my brothers a lot
better and I like them all—even those who I wouldn't expect to become
good friends with. I already know that the next three years are going to be
great with these guys.
Friends from the Heart,
Forever.
