Second term is much better My spring break has consisted of reading—all day. And while, as a type-A nerd, I love reading, it doesn't make a very interesting story. Instead, I'd like tell you about how much better second term of freshman year is than the first.
Unlike first term, I had some say in my class schedule. Although I have class from 9:10 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. three days a week (with no break for lunch!), I have Thursdays all to myself; I love getting to sleep in and catch up. It's like an early weekend, which is pretty awesome.
My favorite part of second semester is my new classes and professors. It's been incredibly refreshing to take new courses with new teachers. Halfway through second semester, I've already met many new and interesting people.
Unlike first term, where you feel distinctly out of place as a freshman, during second term, being an underclassman really isn't a big deal. While many will tell you that Cowan Dining Commons has a distinct and immutable seating arrangement depending on what fraternity you're in or what sport you play, people are surprisingly approachable. It's fun to pick a random table and see whom you'll meet. If they happen to be upper-classmen, it's really not a big deal.
This term I've also had time to do a little more exploring, instead of frantically trying to navigate my way around campus. I've discovered some shops downtown, like Hair Place, where I recently revamped my look, and Burke's Bakery, where thanks to me and my boyfriend's crestfallen faces when we found out they didn't take debit cards, got free donuts! It's taken some time for me to come out of my shell and explore, but when I have, it's been rewarding.
I guess my point is this: when you come to school, the first term might not be the greatest. I know mine wasn't: stressing about paying tuition, making friends and fitting in, and keeping up with my coursework filled most of my time. But from one who learned the hard way, I'd say, give it time. While I'll always remember my first term fondly for its novelty, I can say that my second term is much better, and if you're willing to give it a chance, yours might be, too!
