Nerd tendencies

Well, the school year is over and I'm back to shoveling. That's right, manure, shavings, the whole nine yards. For those of you who haven't followed me since my last entry, that means I'm once again living on my aunt's horse farm in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky! Three days a week I get paid to feed and train horses. My current project is a four-year-old named Curly who should be ready to ride any day now.

When I'm not working on the farm, I drive to Woodford Equine Hospital in nearby Versailles. Depending on the day, I might hang out at the clinic barn or ride out with an ambulatory vet and watch a castration, tooth float, or pregnancy test. I haven't gotten to watch a surgery yet, but here's hoping! In my spare time (and there's still plenty!) I ride my horse Taz, which is nice since he was too far away for me to see regularly during the school year.

Having nerd tendencies, I can't seem to take the summer off completely. I'm currently reading and studying a book on the fundamentals of music in preparation for my music theory class in the fall, and constantly have my nose buried in one novel or another—it's nice to read something because I want to! And of course, what's the summer without the pledge to workout like crazy and get a tan? Both of those are currently in the works, too.

It's been kind of hard to not be able to go back home to Winter Park, Florida for the summer. While I love all the horse-time I'm getting at my aunt's, it's not exactly home, and I miss all of my friends even more now. Luckily I'll be flying down in August; I can't wait!

Well, that's my summer: making money (to pay for books, of course) and getting some invaluable pre-veterinary experience. Oh yeah, and kicking back.
