1.) Hometown: Iowa City, which is in Iowa for those of you who don’t put two and two together very well. Home of the Hawkeyes, I do indeed bleed black and gold and will continue to for the Centre Colonels.
2.) Family/Pets: Well, I have a mom, Leigh, and a dad, Doug, and two pets. My older sister, Emma, who attends St. Olaf College in Minnesota and a golden retriever, Aimee, who makes my life smell much worse but much more enjoyable.
3.) High School: The Iowa City West High, where, according to our website, "excellence is a tradition," whatever that means...one of the best high schools in Iowa. Also, we're the proud owners of a 1-8 football record. The West High spirit is summed up by the fact that we stormed the field after our win. That place did a lot for me; once a Trojan, always a Trojan.
4.) Extracurricular activities: I’m big into golf, but I generally love all sports, watching and playing. I've also been extremely involved in tobacco control and prevention as well as student government. I like to hang out with my friends and pretend that I’m Bear Grylls from Discovery Channel's “Man vs. Wild.”
5.) High school career highlight: Standing front row in our student section and watching one of my good friends sink a three-pointer, literally, at the buzzer to beat our cross-town archrivals by one, preserving our unbeaten record. I still get crazy goose bumps watching the video a year later.
6.) Favorite past "My CENTRE Lifer": Tiger Woods. He went to Centre, right?
7.) The thing you are most looking forward to about Centre: Meeting new people and taking advantage of all the opportunities people keep telling me that I'll have at this school.
8.) Your greatest apprehension about college: Chowan. Not going to lie, it looks really sketchy in the pictures on the website. I’m sure that the food will still be good, but hopefully the new dining area opens sooner than planned.
9.) The way your parents feel about you moving out: There's nothing like waking up in the morning to parents in your room looking at you all sentimentally, or my mom reminding me that “it’s the third Tuesday before the weekend that you leave.” They also keep dropping hints that they’ve bought a house in Danville. Really funny, guys.
10.) Intended major(s) and minor(s): Major: international studies, not partying, as hilarious adults keep suggesting. I don’t want to worry about minors until I no longer am one. Puns are fun, aren’t they?
11.) If you could bring one performer/group to the College's Norton Center for the Arts, it would be: Absolutely the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the greatest band now or ever. Can’t top them for entertainment value but I also would love to see Jim Gaffigan, the comedian. Funny guy.
12.) Worst movie ever: I’m a big Mike Myers fan, but The Love Guru really didn’t do it for me. That movie was a waste of the cost of admission for sure and probably offended several million people a few thousand miles east of here.
13.) If given a million dollars to donate to an organization of your choosing, to what organization (for profit or not-for-profit) would you donate it: Nothing but Nets, an organization popularized by my favorite columnist, Rick Reilly, formerly of Sports Illustrated and now of ESPN. The organization raises money for kids and families in Malaria saturated regions of Africa and sends them mosquito nets to sleep under. These things tangibly save lives, and they are cheap. Great organization.
14.) Favorite smell: The sweet smell of victory. And campfires.
15.) If you could have any one question answered before you die, it would be: When are the Cubs going to win the World Series? Because odds are that it won’t happen before I die.
16.) Person (living or dead) with whom you'd most like to have dinner. In addition, where would you go to eat or what would you cook for them? John Adams, the elder. Over burritos from Pancheros Mexican Grill, I’d love to pick his brain about everything from politics to the revolution. Truly a fascinating individual, he played a large part in creating the nation we have today. Second choice would be Dwight Schrute from NBC’s The Office. We could discuss our shared interest in bears, beets, and Battlestar Gallactica.
17.) If stranded on a deserted island, what would be the one non-survival item you'd want with you? Because of my experience watching Bear Grylls in action on “Man vs. Wild,” I have gained the skills to use any item for survival when in a survival situation. Therefore this question would give me an unfair advantage over my competitors. I’d probably go with golf clubs though.
18.) If you had thought of it first, with what invention do you wish you could have been credited? The futon. Brilliant. 19.) Describe yourself in a haiku (5-7-5) or other poetic form:
(My English teachers say that I’m adept at “kindergarten rhyme;” other poetry doesn’t really work for me.)
Rhyming couplets are my thing
Kind of like my cell phone ring
It’s a song by Run DMC
And I think that it suits me
“It’s Tricky” to rock a good rhyme
To deliver for MCL on time
So I’ll try to wrap this up
With something that sums me up
I couldn’t do a fine haiku
So this from me just for you
One short and simple phrase
Make the most out of all your days
20.) Why did you choose Centre? I wanted to go to school in the South, so my dad and I were on college visits to schools in the South. Centre was an afterthought, the last school on our list to visit before we went home. The day before we went to Centre I visited Rhodes College in Memphis, and was dead set that we should just go home, I thought that my mind was already made up. Then I visited Danville. They say sometimes you can just tell when you’re home. This place felt like home. I’m not sure if I’ll even like it. It's still summer before freshman year, but I have a great feeling about it, and can't wait to get on campus this fall. |
