Both men’s and women’s golf teams head to NCAA Championships

Centre men’s golf team will represent the SCAC in the NCAA Golf Championships from May 11 to May 14.
Centre College’s women’s team received an at-large bid to theNCAA Championships after placing second in the SCAC.
On Monday, May 3, the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee announced the teams and individuals selected to participate in the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's and Women’s Golf Championships.
Twenty-seven conferences were awarded automatic qualifications for the men’s tournament, with a total of 190 participants competing in the event. Seven teams were selected from Pool B and the final three berths were reserved for Pool C. The top five individuals were selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.
The Centre College men will be representing the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference after winning the conference tournament at Stone Mountain Golf Course on Sunday, April 25, in Atlanta, Ga.
Play in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship will begin on Tuesday, May 11, and will run through Friday, May 14, at the Hershey Links and Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. Elizabethtown College is hosting the tournament.
Of the 20 women’s teams participating in the tournament, 11 were granted automatic qualifications for winning their conference tournament, while the rest were selected on an at-large basis.
Centre’s women’s team is one of the teams who received an at-large bid after they took second place in the SCAC Championships, which were held at Stone Mountain Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25.
Centre sophomore Emily Bachert of Bowling Green, Ky., retained the number one ranking in the country following the SCAC Championships.
“We’re honored to have the opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament and we hope to make the most of the endeavor,” said Coordinator of Golf Brian Chafin.
“The team played exceedingly well throughout the season. I thought they started to peak during the last couple of events, so I'm thrilled that they have the chance to play in such a tremendous tournament,” he continued. “Both Swing Coach Bruce Brown and our players have had this goal in mind for this entire season, and I’m so pleased that it has come to reality. It’s a great thing for both Centre and our team.”
The women’s championships will take place at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, from Tuesday, May 11, through Friday, May 14. Hosts of the event will be Oglethorpe University and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
CBS will show highlights of the NCAA Division III women's golf championships on Saturday, June 19 at 4:00 p.m. Highlights of 17 different NCAA championships that took place during the spring will be shown during the CBS seasonal show.
