Anne Seelbach's exhibit of paintings, Tides and The Seasons, is
currently on display in the AEGON Gallery of the Jones Visual
Arts Center.

Centre associate professor of art Judith Pointer Jia says Seelbach
“is a painter whose style is loose and painterly with bold
brushstrokes that appear effortless but are the result of years of
practice.”

Artist and alumna Anne Seelbach will be speaking about her exhibit, Tides and The Seasons, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at the AEGON Gallery. The Gallery Talk will be followed by a reception for the artist.

Seelbach is a former Centre student, attending Centre from 1962 to 1964. Since that time, her life has taken her all over the world, including New York, Austria, Japan, Bulgaria and Belgium.

“Art has been an entry to the wider world,” she says. “I’ve encountered different points of view, different ways of seeing everything, art, culture and history. It seems right to return to Centre and share my experiences through my work.”

“I’ve been painting since I was eight,” continues Seelbach, “and of course I did art at Centre. I remember watercolors I painted of the construction site around the old Kentucky College for Women building. It’s an odd feeling realizing I was last in Danville 46 years ago.”

Judith Pointer Jia, associate professor of art at Centre, says of Seelbach’s work, “Anne is a painter whose style is loose and painterly with bold brushstrokes that appear effortless but are the result of years of practice.”

Visitors to the exhibit will see a sampling of works from several series Seelbach has created in the past six years. Much of her work uses rich colors and imagery from the ocean beaches near her current home in Sag Harbor, NY.

Says Seelbach, “The question ‘What is happening?’ interests me far more than what a scene looks like. What are the unseen physical laws of nature that create each visual element of a particular moment?”

Says Jia, “Seelbach utilizes a variety of drawing and painting media, including oil paint on canvas or paper and acrylic with graphite or charcoal on paper or board. There’s even a painting on clear Plexiglas.”

Seelbach’s exhibit continues through Oct. 23. The Artist’s Talk and Reception are free and open to the public and will be held at The AEGON Gallery, located in the Jones Visual Arts Center at Centre College, 600 W. Walnut, Danville, KY 40422. Unless otherwise noted, gallery hours are 9 a.m to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
