Born and raised in Japan. Served with the Peace Corps in the Ivory Coast and the Central African Republic. Returned to Japan as a Fulbright Hays Fellow at Tokai University's Center for the Study of Civilization. Author of articles evaluating political and social conditions in Africa. Led a Centre travel-study program to Central Africa in 1998 with an emphasis on African history, culture, and language.

an acclaimed book about U.S. press coverage of the war in Vietnam (W.W. Norton and Co., 1993; paperback, University of Chicago Press, 1995). Historic preservation issues related to the Civil War.
Holds a dual appointment as a Centre professor and an administrator; expertise in fund raising, student leadership programs, and strategic planning.
