Get Centred is a contemplative Christian worship service held on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. in the candlelit sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church. This half-hour service of music, prayer, scripture readings, and silence is a great way to start the week.

Tuesday, Oct. 5. Dutch Anyone? Koen Hocker, a student from the Netherlands, will be teaching useful Dutch phrases and serving Dutch cheese in his Dutch clogs from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Ewen room (2nd floor of Campus Center). This seminar is sponsored by International Student Association (ISA).

Thursday, Oct. 7. CONVO: Punch Brothers, 8 p.m., Newlin Hall. This group of fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar players includes Nickel Creek’s Chris Thile, who, according to the Washington Post, “may well be the most virtuosic American ever to play the mandolin.” Their music is an eclectic blend that reflects five singular styles.
Thursday, Oct. 7. Orchid Ensemble will be giving an informal lecture/performance during common hour (11:20-12:20 or so with extended conversation) in the Audrey Gillespie Recital Hall (114) in Grant Hall.

Thursday, Oct. 7. The Physics Colloquium Series presents Dr. Jamie Day of Transylvania University: Natural Philosophy during Transylvania’s Golden Age. Prominent 19th century scholars at Transylvania University made sojourns to Europe to purchase the latest scientific apparatus. This presentation will highlight several items from Transylvania’s collection, as well as a few of the more unusual legends about the early scientists. All are welcome. Refreshments are served at 4 p.m., and the talks start at 4:10 p.m. in Olin 124.

Monday, Oct. 11. Blood Drive with the American Red Cross. Help save lives by donating blood! The American Red Cross will be collecting blood donations from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. in the Ewen Room of the Campus Center. Monday, Oct. 25. CONVO: Jane Austen and Cognitive Science. 7 p.m., Vahlkamp Theatre. Professor Lisa Zunshine of the University of Kentucky will speak on how Jane Austen intuitively experimented with her readers’ theory of mind, that is, our evolved cognitive ability to explain people’s observable behavior in terms of their unobservable mental states.
Wednesday, Oct. 27. CONVO: Wood Energy and Improving Appalachian Forest Sustainability. 7:30 p.m., Vahlkamp Theatre. Grant Curry of ecoPower Generation will speak about the reasons for declining forest productivity in eastern Kentucky and how right-sized wood energy plants will provide the incentive necessary for landowners to improve the productivity of their forests for the benefit of future generations.
Thursday, Oct. 28. CONVO: Tokyo String Quartet. 8 p.m., Newlin Hall. Regarded as one of the supreme ensembles of the world, this string quartet performs on a group of renowed Stradivarius instruments.

You can always go back to the week before or archives as well.Pre-Dental students: The University of Louisville Dental School will have an Open House on Friday, Nov. 5. The program will begin officially a 2:30, but students interested in touring may do so beginning at 2 p.m. The open house is for students who are interested in learning about the DMD program or the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program. There is no need to RSVP for this event. If you have questions or need additional information, contact UofL at (502) 852-5081. Also, any Pre-Dental students who have not met with Stephanie Dew should do so as soon as possible.

Volunteers needed for the YMCA! The YMCA, in cooperation with the Bonner Program, is facilitating a gymnastics program for preschool-age kids on campus and needs volunteers! If you would like to help, the program runs Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for preschoolers and from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for beginner-level kids. Flag-football games for pre-school age kids take place on Mondays from 5:30-6:30. If you would like to volunteer with either of these programs, please contact Patrick Noltemeyer at volunteer@centre.edu.
