Meetings/Gatherings

Sundays. Get Centred is a contemplative Christian worship service held on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. in the candlelit sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church. This half-hour service of music, prayer, scripture readings, and silence is a great way to start the week.

Friday, Dec. 3 – Sunday, Dec. 5. Art Yard Sale. Come one come all and buy some art. The Second Annual Art Yard Sale is here. Painting, drawing, ceramic, and glass works will all be up for grabs in this informal sale. Time/Place: 10 a.m. – 5.p.m. in the Aegon Gallery. Nothing costs more than $50. This is a great chance to decorate your room, find the perfect Christmas present, and support Centre artists. Also, Centre Nest will have global goods for sale! Don’t miss it. Saturday, Dec. 4. Jingle Bell 5K. 10 a.m. at Millennium Park. Kappa Alpha Theta presents the 11th annual Jingle Bell 5k fun run/walk to benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates. Sunday, Dec. 5. Handel’s Messiah (Free Concert). The Presbyterian Church will present Handel’s Messiah at 4 p.m. Everyone from Centre is invited! The concert will include an orchestra, four soloists from UK and Centre College, and a complete choir of 42 members. A “love offering” will be collected which will go directly to support “Soups on Us.” On Saturdays, three churches in town prepare and deliver more thab 300 meals to hungry people in the community. Do join us for a light supper afterward. See you there!

Erika Voss ’12 will advance as one of three finalists in the Flute Society of Kentucky’s Collegiate Competition. She competed against 22 of the best flutists in the state, performing Syrinx by Claude Debussy. Erika studies with Jana Flygstad. The final competition will be held January 14 in Louisville.

Louesa Akin won first place in Cellular and Molecular Biology for her oral presentation on "Scoring with NOE Restraints Improves Protein Structure Results," describing work she did with Professor Weiner at Vanderbilt. Zack Sweeney won first place in Chemistry for his oral presentation on "Virtual Screening of MurA," describing work he did with Dr. Muzyka. Jerry Yang won second place in Physics and Astronomy for his oral presentation on "Optical Characterization of Phase Shifted Grating Waveguide Structures," describing work he did with Dr. Neiser. Ryan Will won first place in Psychology for his oral presentation on "Non-Pharmaceutical Fertility Enhancement in Captive Birds Through Sexual Conditioning," describing work he did with Dr. Cusato.

yatesCONGRATULATIONS to Sam Yates ’11, Centre’s first Mitchell Scholar. He received one of 12 Mitchell Scholarships after an exciting two days of interviews last weekend in Washington, D.C. He will read for an M.Phil in Theatre and Performance at Trinity College Dublin and hopes to work with a few area companies, including the venerable Abbey Theatre and the Painted Filly Theatre, co-founded in 2005 by a former Mitchell Scholar. Mitchell Scholars spend an all-expense-paid year studying at one of the nine universities on the island of Ireland. The fellowship honors Senator George Mitchell and his work with the Northern Ireland peace talks and is among the most competitive and prestigious of the post-graduate awards available to Americans.
