Welcome to Notesworthy

chaos Wednesday, Nov. 10. The Physics Colloquium Series presents
Dr. Ganpathy Murthy (UK): Quantum Chaos. Dr. Murthy
is an award-winning teacher and researcher in condensed matter
physics at UK. “Mesoscopic systems contain between hundreds
and thousands of electrons and represent a regime between atoms
and truly macroscopic systems. Such systems are typically disorder-
dominated, in the sense that one cannot make the geometry truly
regular. The dynamics in such systems becomes chaotic. I will
start by describing chaos in classical systems, and then talk about
the problems encountered in quantizing chaotic systems.”
All are welcome. Refreshments are served at 4pm, and the talk
begins at 4:10 in Olin 124.

Student News

Congratulations. On Saturday, Nov. 6, 22 teams of three students competed at the University of Kentucky in the Mid Central regionals of the ACM International Programming contest. We had three teams competing, all of whom finished in the top half–quite remarkable given the size of the program! Third Place went to Centre Gold: Nicola Klein, Cara Monical and Qian Xie; 6th Place to Centre White: Ruohan Liu, Thanh Nguyen and Chris Robinson; and 11th Place to Centre Black: Ryan Curry, Juan Landaverde, and Conor Mather-Licht. There were more than 140 teams in the entire Mid-Central region which covers five states. Our best team came in 15th in the overall competition. Congratulations to all the students.

papeA paper submitted by Brent White and six former students has been published in the December issue of the peer-reviewed journal, American Journal of Primatology, 2010, vol. 72, pages 1082-1091. This research has implications beyond the study of primates. It reveals some problems with how we process urine samples when we are using them to estimate the blood concentration of hormones, drugs, toxins, or other compounds. Title: Specific gravity and creatinine as corrections for variation in urine concentration in humans, gorillas, and woolly monkeys. Authors: Brent C. White, Keri M.
