Meetings/Gatherings
Every Sunday night, 10 p.m. (Feb. 14, 21, 28, March 7,14, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9). Get Centred is a contemplative Christian worship service held each Sunday night at 10 p.m. in the candlelit sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church. This half-hour service of music, prayer, scripture readings and silence is a great way to start the week. Join us!

Now through Saturday, March 27. Recyclemania! RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs nationwide that provides the campus community with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. Over a 10-week period campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. This will also require extra help with recycling. If anyone is interested in volunteering, please contact Cheryl Coulter at 238-5923 or e-mail cheryl.coulter@centre.edu. Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 3 to 4 p.m. The Physics Colloquium and Film Series presents the one-hour film The Atom Smashers, a documentary of the very recent intensive search for the Higgs boson particle at the Fermilab particle accelerator laboratory near Chicago. Scientists rush to discover the Higgs boson before the new Large Hadron Collider, which dwarfs Fermilab’s “Tevatron” in terms of size and power, becomes operational in Switzerland. Anyone is welcome to come view this 70-minute film with us. No scientific knowledge is required. Refreshments will be served and the film will begin shortly after 3 p.m. in Olin 129. Friday, Feb. 12. Laissez les bons temps rouler! La Société Française with APO, Swing Club, Centre Players, and Rotaract are sponsoring a Mardi Gras Charity Masquerade Ball from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Warehouse. Tickets can be purchased in advance in front of Cowan for $3 or for $5 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation to help rebuild New Orleans. Tickets include admission, a mask, beads, and King Cake. This is a semi-formal, non-alcoholic event.

Tuesday, Feb. 16. John B. Nici, a New York area high school teacher, Queens College lecturer, and author of Barron’s AP Art History—the best-selling advanced-placement examination review book—will give a presentation titled “(Re)Packaging Art History for High School Students” at 4 p.m. in JVAC 201. A lively speaker and seasoned teacher of advanced-placement courses in both art history and English, Nici will address the nature, goals, and expectations of the College Board’s AP courses. All are welcome to attend this event sponsored by Centre College’s Art Program.

We will be doing flood-relief work with Community Collaborations International, an organization that serves as a liaison between volunteers and non-profits in the Atlanta area. Important Study Abroad Meetings and Information
Reminder to faculty: Tuesday, Feb. 9 at noon is the deadline to turn in all faculty recommendation forms for students applying to study abroad in 2010-11.

Tuesday, Feb. 16. Interested in studying abroad this summer? Learn about a brand new opportunity this summer, 2010, in Merida, Mexico. Phyllis Passariello will direct a three-week program in sunny Merida; students will earn three hours of course credit. Come to the Davidson room at 11:20 a.m. to learn more about the opportunity.

Thursday, Feb. 11. Summer Strasbourg program meeting for students who know they want to participate will be held at 11:20 a.m. in the Davidson room.

Special Housing Accommodations. Students who were granted special housing accommodation this past year are reminded that notes are due for 2010-11 to Parsons Student Health no later than March 6. They need to be updated every year, and your having received the accommodation last year does not guarantee it this upcoming year. If you are going abroad for Spring Term or home for winter break and need to have this form updated by your physician, etc., you can download it from the Parsons Web Site (click here). Questions? Juniors and Faculty. John C. Young Honors Program. Juniors: It’s not too early to begin working on your application for our John C. Young Honors Program. Applications are open to rising seniors (students who will be seniors in the 2010-11 academic year). Student applicants will need a faculty sponsor. Additional details may be found here. The application deadline is March 31. This year’s John C. Young symposium will be held Sunday, April 18.

Special Education Tutors Needed! Boyle County Middle School is looking for Centre students willing to volunteer tutoring students with special needs. Ideally, students would be available to volunteer from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, but if you're interested and cannot make this time, they will accommodate your schedule. Volunteers needed for children with special needs. Centre student volunteers are needed who are willing to work with children with special needs in the CAKE (Clinic Adapted for Kids’ Exercise) program offered by the McDowell Wellness Center. Volunteers would be trained to work one-on-one with a child with a disability to develop gross motor skills, and to enhance physical activity and aquatic skills. Activities take place in the gymnasium and pool at the McDowell Wellness Center in Danville. Volunteers are needed Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. March 5 - April 23.Interested students should contact Patrick Noltemeyer.

Feb. 10-12. Centre Nest’s Valentine’s Day Sale! We have bags, journals, and jewelry on sale from $8-$20! All of the products were made by Nest’s loan recipients, who are women in developing countries fighting to become self-sufficient artist-entrepreneurs. And all proceeds go towards a Nest microloan to the women of Destiny, a group in India helping women who have been trafficked in sex slavery or are at risk of being trafficked develop their own art based businesses. Spread the love this Valentine’s Day!

Important Information from Career Services

Need money to help pay for your graduate school applications and travel? Do you have at least a 3.35 GPA in your major? The Extraordinary Success Program (ESP) can help! This is a program which can provide funding for out-of-state graduate school applications. Further information about the program can be found here. Start working on your application as the deadline is Feb. 16.

Juniors and Seniors! It’s time once again for “Spotlight Career Fair," when Centre joins Kentucky’s other private colleges and universities to host a career fair where employers recruit students for post-graduation jobs and summer internships nationwide. Various Kentucky graduate schools will also be represented. This year’s fair is Thursday, March 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. To register, please phone 5283. You must come by Career Services for an “info session” and brief resume critique. Dates/time of sessions: Feb. 18, 23, 25 and March 2 at 11:30 a.m.

Faculty/Staff News
Conrad Shiba appeared at the Dulcibrrr festival at Rough River Dam State Park on February 5-6. He performed in three concerts, playing guitar, banjo, mountain dulcimer, and hammered dulcimer. He also co-led a jam session with the other performers and taught a workshop on the ukulele.
