Get Centred is a contemplative Christian worship service held on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. in the candlelit sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church. This half-hour service of music, prayer, scripture readings, and silence is a great way to start the week.

Tuesday, Sept. 28. Moon Festival Party. Join us in the Pearl Hall basement from 6 to 8 p.m. to enjoy Chinese and Japanese food, including mooncakes, and some other traditional food from Asia.

Tuesday, Sept. 28. Join Centre Democrats for our first official meeting at 7 p.m. in Ewen. Watch President Obama's video message to young voters, learn about upcoming canvassing events, and sign-up for t-shirts and the Rally to Restore Sanity.

Wednesday, Sept. 29. CONVO: Domestic Violence Awareness. 8 p.m., Vahlkamp Theatre. The director of the domestic violence group in Lincoln County, Lone Gooch, who is also a marriage and family therapist, will speak about the treatment and legal options available for domestic violence victims and how societal attitudes toward women and relationships contribute to the belief that violence is an acceptable way to solve problems.
Thursday Sept. 30. Fall Service Expo. Want to volunteer in the Danville/Boyle County community? Community partners and campus organizations who are in need of volunteers will be on campus to give information and recruit volunteers for their organizations. Big Brothers/Big Sisters, iMentor, C.A.R.E., and eight other organizations will be here. Meet in the Ewen room of the Campus Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 1. CONVO: The Night Kite Revival. 8 p.m., Weisiger Theatre. Three spoken-word poets bring you “the planet’s ultimate spoken word theater experience.” Anis Mojgani, Derrick Brown, and Buddy Wakefield team up to create “a disarming verbal circus successfully reviving, redeeming, and releasing its audiences from the heaviness of lives caught in holding patterns.” Click here for more.
Tuesday, Oct. 5. Sophomore Survival—you spoke, we listened. This fourth annual program just for sophomores will be at 5 p.m. Get information in three brief sessions on internships, choosing a major, and resume writing. We’ll have snacks throughout and a pizza party at the end. Door prizes and a grand prize ($50 to Walmart) at the end. Call 859-238-5283 to sign up; deadline is Oct. 1.

Thursday, Oct. 7. CONVO: Punch Brothers, 8 p.m., Newlin Hall. This group of fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar players includes Nickel Creek’s Chris Thile, who, according to the Washington Post, “may well be the most virtuosic American ever to play the mandolin.” Their music is an eclectic blend that reflects five singular styles.
Monday, Oct. 25. CONVO: Jane Austen and Cognitive Science. 7 p.m., Vahlkamp Theatre. Professor Lisa Zunshine of the University of Kentucky will speak on how Jane Austen intuitively experimented with her readers’ theory of mind, that is, our evolved cognitive ability to explain people’s observable behavior in terms of their unobservable mental states.
Wednesday, Oct. 27. CONVO: Wood Energy and Improving Appalachian Forest Sustainability. 7:30 p.m., Vahlkamp Theatre. Grant Curry of ecoPower Generation will speak about the reasons for declining forest productivity in eastern Kentucky and how right-sized wood energy plants will provide the incentive necessary for landowners to improve the productivity of their forests for the benefit of future generations.
Thursday, Oct. 28. CONVO: Tokyo String Quartet. 8 p.m., Newlin Hall. Regarded as one of the supreme ensembles of the world, this string quartet performs on a group of renowed Stradivarius instruments.
