Welcome to Notesworthy
Wednesday, April 20. A The Physics Film Series presents afilmed lecture by Harvey Brown of Oxford: “Time and Motion.”
Newton’s first law of motion-and the very meaning of inertia-
has been described as either completely obvious (D’Alembert)
or a 'logician’s nightmare' (ex-editor of the American Journal
of Physics). Sometimes the simplest things in physics are the
most subtle. The first law will be described in historical context,
explaining a connection with the ancient Greeks’ distinction
between natural and violent motion and with Descartes’ natural
philosophy. You will also learn why it still requires careful
handling and what it tells us about time in physics. All are
welcome to view this 70-minute Perimeter Institute lecture.
Time/Place: 4 p.m., Olin 124.

Sam Morgan and Pavan Podapati participated in a prescribed burn on the Central Kentucky Wildlife Refuge on Friday, April 8. A prescribed burn is a method of encouraging the growth of native warm season grasses. A 12-acre field of these grasses was burned in a controlled manner to enhance the biodiversity of the field. Sam was one of six people who monitored the edges of the fire using a flapper (a rubber mat attached to the end of a long handle). Pavan assisted in “mopping up,” which ensures that all the fire is out. Sam and Pavan are senior biology majors.Click here for past Faculty News
