Welcome to Notesworthy
Wednesday, April 27. A filmed physics lecture by Seth Lloydof MIT: “Quantum Life.” Recent experimental evidence suggests
that living organisms are using quantum mechanics in a
sophisticated fashion to enhance the efficiency of photosynthesis.
Bacteria are essentially performing a quantum computation to
extract energy from light. We will show how plants and bacteria
perform quantum information processing and will discuss how
living creatures engage in all sorts of quantum hanky-panky in
their efforts to survive and reproduce. All are welcome.
Time/Place: 4 p.m., Olin 124.

William R. Levin (Art History, emeritus) delivered papers presenting aspects of his theory of an overall interpretation of Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise-a masterpiece of early-Renaissance sculpture-linking biblical history to contemporary events, at the annual meetings of the South-Central Renaissance Conference and the Midwest Art History Society, convened recently in Saint Louis and Grand Rapids, respectively. In addition, at the invitation of the curator of paintings at the Cincinnati Art Museum, he provided opinions on the early-modern Italian paintings presently in storage there. He also served on a national awards committee judging nominees in the areas of artistic achievement, museum exhibitions and catalogues (historical and contemporary fields), scholarly research and publication, and teaching.Click here for past Faculty News
