Welcome to Notesworthy

CONVO: Thursday, March 29. The Science of Optics;
The History of Art.
Time/Place: 8 p.m., Newlin Hall.
Dr. Charles Falco shows a wealth of evidence the artist
David Hockney and he discovered that demonstrates optical
instruments were in use—by artists, not scientists—nearly
200 years earlier than commonly thought possible. These
discoveries account for the remarkable, but previously
unexplained, transformation in the reality of portraits
that occurred early in the 15th century. Dr. Falco is a
world-renowned scientist and quite famous in the arts
and sciences for the Hockney-Falco Thesis that the
creators of some great works of art were assisted by
optical imaging techniques.

Thursday, March 29. The Art and Materials
Science of the Motorcycle.
Time/Place: 4:10 p.m.,
Olin 124. From the Bessemer steel used on the first
motorized bicycle in 1868 to sintered aluminum ceramic
composites and TiN (thin film coatings used on standard
production machines today). Motorcycles always have been
at the forefront of the use of high-performance materials.
Using examples mostly drawn from the Guggenheim
Museum's "The Art of the Motorcycle" exhibition, this talk
by Dr. Charles Falco examines the developments in materials
technology over the past 150 years that have resulted in
relatively inexpensive mass-produced motorcycles capable
of achieving speeds of 190 mph.
