Hands-on Humanities

After studying Greek classics, students in some freshman humanities tried carving their own sculptures using soapstone blocks. Their results are on display in Young Hall.
“In the past, students had only looked at art and architecture (from slides and plates in a book), but now they have a chance to experience the thrills and frustrations of creating their own (relatively small) works,” explains James V. Morrison, who has used the soapstone project in his humanities classes for several years.
