Under the volcano
Chemistry professor Conrad Shiba submitted this photo taken during the "Physical Science of Volcanoes" course, taught in New Zealand during the Centre term by Shiba and chemistry colleague Joe Workman.
Shiba writes: "Here, we are on the actively volcanic White Island in front of a
fumarole (steam vent). The yellow color is due to crystallized sulfur.
We all had to wear hard hats and gas masks (hanging around people's
necks)."
