Ready, set, recycle! RecycleMania begins Feb. 1
Recognized across Kentucky as a leader in sustainability efforts, Centre College will once again participate in RecyleMania, a friendly competition among colleges and universities to promote waste reduction on campus.
More than 500 participating institutions in the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected over the course of the eight-week challenge. Schools are then ranked based on three categories: most recycled waste per capita; best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste; and least overall combined trash and recycling.
Last year, Centre led all Kentucky colleges and universities in the amount of paper and cardboard recycled per capita, contributing to the collective 89.1 million pounds of waste composted and recycled for the 2014 RecycleMania Tournament.
The competition is split into four stages, each with a specific focus: “Recycling,” which runs Feb. 1-14; “Reuse,” which runs Feb. 15-28; “Reduce,” which runs March 1-14; and “Zero Waste,” which runs March 15-28.
RecycleMania is one of many ways Centre strives toward environmental sustainability and responsibility. The College maintains four Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings on campus, has received grants totaling more than $35,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency to aid campus sustainability and has established a Green Fund that supports renewable energy.
The RecycleMania competition runs Feb. 1 through March 28. For more information about volunteering or participating, contact Recycling Coordinator Cheryl Coulter at firstname.lastname@example.org.
