Enrolling in a Non-Centre Program

KIIS

Through our own regular semester programs in England, France, Mexico, Japan, Turkey, and Northern Ireland, and through CentreTerm programs every January in several additional countries around the world, we provide students a large and rich option of choices in international study. About 96 percent of Centre students who study abroad do so using programs that we run ourselves.

A few students each year choose to study abroad for a semester in a non-Centre program. The Center for Global Citizenship Office keeps on file information on hundreds of non-Centre programs, arranged by country, for students to consult at their leisure. To participate in a semester program abroad sponsored by another institution or organization, Centre students take a temporary leave of absence from Centre. They fill out a form from the Registrar’s Office and list the courses they intend to take abroad. In consultation with the faculty, the Registrar then lets those students know ahead of time how their non-Centre abroad courses will translate into Centre courses when they transfer in. Grades from non-Centre courses are recorded on the student transcript and used to figure graduating honors but are not counted in the student’s Centre College cumulative grade-point average.

Kentucky Institute for International Studies

Many of the students who have considered non-Centre study abroad programs will choose one of the many KIIS (Kentucky Institute for International Studies) offerings. KIIS is a consortia of Kentucky schools, with a few from Tennessee and Ohio, who have partnered to make study abroad more affordable to more students at institutions in Kentucky. For more information on the wide range of KIIS options, please visit kiis.org.

Some Centre students with limited or no financial aid may be able to participate in a non-Centre, semester program abroad for about the same cost they would pay at Centre. Dr. Reigelman or Leigh Cocanougher in the Center for Global Citizenship Office can advise students about this.

Because of the law, our Student Financial Planning Office may not process any financial aid or loans for students on leaves of absence from Centre. That is, students who take a leave of absence to enroll in a non-Centre program abroad will not be eligible to receive Centre, State, or Federal financial aid of any kind through our Student Financial Planning office. This includes State KEES money and the various federal loan programs. In the past few years Centre student have occasionally been misled by questionable recruiting tactics of outside organizations that have implied that Centre would sign some sort of “consortial” agreement with them, and that our Student Financial Planning office would then be allowed to process some of the students’ non-Centre financial aid. This is not the case; we will not sign consortial agreements with outside institutions or organizations, and our Student Financial Planning office will, unfortunately, not be able to process outside grants or loans, including the KEES grants.

Upcoming K.I.I.S. programs directed by Centre professors

The two K.I.I.S. programs directed by Centre professors qualify for a Centre senior subsidy. These are the program in Costa Rica (directed by Prof. Genny Ballard, with Profs. Robyn Cutright, and Maria Galvan) and in Istanbul (directed by Prof. Tom McCollough).

Costa Rica. (Spanish, anthropology, and education) 16 June—22 July 2012. The KIIS summer program in Costa Rica provides students the opportunity to explore the ecological and cultural wonders of this small, yet vibrant nation. Class begins in Santa Elena, the closest village to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. Students soon move into their first homestay, in San Ramon, where they live and attend classes for twelve days. During the third week of the program, the group travels to the Caribbean coast, staying first in Puerto Viejo, Limon, an eclectic, laid back, surfing town, then visiting the Bri Bri indigenous reserve and its schools. Finally, students travel south into Panama to the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, where students meet people from a local cooperative that protects nesting turtles, visit local school children, and snorkel the coral reefs of these picturesque islands. The final few weeks of the program is spent in the classroom and working in schools in Colorado de Corredores near the border of Panama. Contact Prof. Genny Ballard. Estimated cost including airfare: $3525-$3675.

Istanbul. (Art, history, political science) 29 June—28 July 2012. The KIIS summer program in Turkey offers students an opportunity to experience the history and culture of one of the world's most ancient, yet most progressive countries. The Istanbul program includes courses in international business and marketing, art and architecture of Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul, and the history of the Ottoman Empire. The courses in this program each include two hours of daily instruction, either on-campus or at a site in Istanbul. In addition, one day a week is set aside for excursions to museums, mosques, palaces, churches, and other cultural sites in and around Istanbul. The final week of the program includes an excursion to the Aegean Coast and to such historic and cultural sites as Pergamum, Troy, and Gallipoli. Students are housed on a the campus of a private university in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city and the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. No previous knowledge of Turkish is necessary; all instruction is in English. Contact Prof. Tom McCollough. Estimated cost including airfare: $4445-$4745.

Obtaining a Passport. If you do not currently have a passport that will remain valid for at least one month after your return, you should begin the process of obtaining one as soon as you are selected, since it can sometimes take six or more weeks. You can now do this at the Danville Post Office at the bottom of Main Street.
