survive. Even after the policies of the Great Leap Forward were reversed and China’s economy began to prosper, her family’s wealth was lost forever.

She now inhabits a modest two-room apartment, living without the luxuries she had been accustomed to as a child. However, when someone asked her what she thought about Chairman Mao, she said that he was still a great leader, even though he made some serious mistakes as leader of the country. I am continually amazed by Mao’s positive image here, even in light of the Communist party’s dark past.
