Bruce K. Johnson has been the Brown Professor of Economics at Centre College since 1992. He joined the college faculty in 1987.

He regularly teaches core courses in economic principles, microeconomics, and econometrics, and has taught a wide array of field courses, including industrial organization, urban economics, and the economics of sports.

His research uses sports as a laboratory for microeconomic analysis. He has written about various issues in sports economics in journals including Contemporary Economic Policy, Southern Economic Journal, Eastern Economic Journal, and Journal of Sports Economics, and in book chapters published by Syracuse University Press, the Brookings Institution, and others. His current research focuses on tax-payer financed stadiums and arenas for professional sports teams. He uses contingent valuation surveys to estimate the value of civic pride and other public goods teams produce for their communities, filling an important gap in our understanding of this important public policy issue.

Reporters from media outlets around the nation regularly seek out Johnson for his views on various sports economics topics. He has been interviewed by such organizations as ABCNews.com, CNNMoney.com, the Los Angeles Times, the Christian Science Monitor, the Sacramento Bee, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and numerous other newspapers about stadium economics, antitrust and sports, baseball labor strife, the economics of horse racing, and other topics in sports economics.

Johnson has been a contributing columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader, and his numerous opinion pieces applying economic analysis to current events have appeared in newspapers around the country, including USA Today, the Boston Globe, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Charlotte Observer, the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the Louisville Courier-Journal.

During the 1993-94 academic year and during the spring semesters of 2001 and 2006, Johnson served as resident director of Centre's overseas program in London. During the 2001-02 academic year he was visiting professor of economics at the University of Virginia. He serves as a member of the Consensus Forecasting Group, the nonpartisan panel of economists charged with developing the official forecast of state government revenues for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

A magna cum laude graduate of Transylvania University, Johnson earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Virginia.
