Nayef Samhat was named Hower Associate Professor of Government and International Studies at Centre College in 2005, where he has taught since 1996.

Samhat has particular expertise in international relations theory and international political economy. He also has expertise in the politics of the Middle East, particularly the international relations of the Middle East.

Samhat has published in Millenium: Journal of International Studies, International Politics, Global Society and Policy Studies Journal. He also contributed to an edited text, Global Society in Transition: An International Politics Reader (Kluwer Publishers). And he published Democratizing Global Politics (SUNY Press) with Rodger Payne of the University of Louisville.

As a result of Samhat's expertise on the Middle East, he has published opinion essays in the Lexington Herald-Leader , Miami Herald, Danbury Connecticut News Times and the Cincinnati Enquirer.


Before joining the Centre faculty, Samhat taught at Elmhurst College and was a graduate assistant at Northwestern University.

Samhat holds a B.A. in international affairs from George Washington University's School of International and Public Affairs, an M.A. in international affairs from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University. During his studies, Samhat received several academic honors including the David Minar Prize at Northwestern for outstanding graduate achievement and research in the department of political science.
