Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Lisa Williams received her M.F.A. in creative writing/poetry from the University of Virginia, her M.A. in literature with creative writing thesis from the University of Cincinnati, and her B.A. from Belmont University.

Williams' book of poems, The Hammered Dulcimer (1998) won the May Swenson Poetry Award. Her second book, Woman Reading to the Sea , was selected by Joyce Carol Oates for the 2007 Barnard Women Poets Prize and is forthcoming by W.W. Norton in April 2008. Her poems have been published or forthcoming in Measure, Salmagundi, Raritan, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Cincinnati Review, Southwest Review , and her work will also be featured in Best American Erotic Poems: 1800 to Present , edited by David Lehman and forthcoming from Scribner's in 2008. Her essays on contemporary poets appear in The Hollins Critic.

In 2004, Williams was awarded the Rome Prize in Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She is currently associate professor of English at Centre and a Centre Scholar.
