Centre offers a challenging academic experience with an emphasis on personal education from gifted teachers. Ninety-eight percent of Centre’s faculty have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree, and the student/faculty ratio is 10 to 1. The average class size is 18 students, with normal maximum class size no more than 30. Professors work closely with students, and more than one-third of students collaborate with a professor in advanced research. Self-designed majors are encouraged and double majors are common.
The College has chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa, as well as a number of discipline-specific honoraries.
Honors Program. The John C. Young Scholars Program enables outstanding seniors to spend a year on an independent study project. The scholars work closely with a faculty mentor and receive financial support for research and travel. They present their results at a public symposium in late spring, and their papers are published in journal form by the College. John C. Young was Centre’s fourth president (1830–1857).
Pre-Professional Programs
Pre-Med. The successful pre-med program includes separate advisors for medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary science.
Pre-Law. The active Pre-Law Society is supported by two advisors.
Pre-M.B.A. (business)
Engineering. Centre offers a dual-degree 2-3 engineering program in collaboration with four major universities. After three years at Centre and two years at one of four major universities, graduates receive both B.S. or B.A. and B.S.E. degrees.
