Living on campus is exciting. Ninety-eight percent of Centre students live on campus, so that's where the action is. Games, pizza parties, late-night study sessions, hall programs, movie marathons, and great conversations quickly turn residential life into the time of your life!
Where Will I Live?
Unless you’ve spent a lot of time away from your house, residence life is going to be a big change. Often it’s the most challenging adjustment you’ll make at college. But it doesn’t have to be! Centre students will tell you that living on campus is fun.
For first-year students, the choices are pretty simple: men live in Acheson/Caldwell or Nevin Hall, women live in either Cheek/Evans or Yerkes (pronounced YER-keys) Hall. A room will be assigned to you by the Housing Director, based on information you give us. You’ll find out in mid-July where you’ll be living, as well as the name and address of your roommate. The housing brochure you’ll receive with this information will give you the rules and specific regulations of residence life.
What are the Residence Halls Like?
Three main clusters of halls dot the campus, which we call the North Side, Old Centre, and the Old Quad. Each cluster has access to a laundromat, a computer lab, kitchen facilities, ironing boards, vending machines, parking lots, bicycle racks, lounges, and study rooms. Bingham Hall in the Old Centre cluster and the new Pearl Hall are handicapped-accessible.
Every floor is staffed with one or more upper-class Resident Assistants (RAs). These students will be there to welcome you, take care of any technical problems in your room, distribute information, and help resolve problems. Residence Directors (RDs) live on campus and serve as a link between the students, RAs, and the administration.
There is also quite a bit of apartment-style housing near campus for upperclass students that is owned by the College.
Tips You Won't Find in the Viewbook:
• Make sure you bring extra-long sheets (36” x 80”).
• Refrigerators must be six cubic feet or smaller; microwaves must be 700 watts or less.
• Each room has a phone jack, so you may bring a landline phone. If you wish to have voice mail, it is available to all students.
• A computer is helpful but not necessary since there are many computer labs on Centre’s campus.
It’s a good idea to check with your future roommate to coordinate what you’re bringing so that you don’t end up with two of everything.
“Residence life is unique at Centre College—emphasis is placed on developing relationships with residents and empowering them to achieve their goals. Being an R.D. is a great leadership opportunity, plus I've been able to reach out to residents in times of need.”

What about Food and Meals?
Eating on campus is varied and convenient. We have three on-campus choices for dining:
• Chowan Dining Commons comes complete with a hot-foods line, an international line, a pizza and pasta bar, order-made sandwiches at the deli counter, a soup and salad bar, an ice cream machine, and a dessert bar. Chowan serves three meals a day during the week and two on Saturdays and Sundays. If you miss the main serving hours, Chowan is open between meals for cereal, salad,
fruit, ice cream, or a sandwich.
• The Centre Grille, located on the second floor of the Warehouse (our student center), offers typical fast food made to order (burgers, hot sandwiches) as
well as salads, fruit, ice cream, and pastries. Open Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. - 1 a.m., Friday 10 a.m. - midnight, Saturday 1 p.m. - midnight, and Sunday 1 p.m. - 1 a.m.
• The Hall of Fame Cafe located in the heart of
Sutcliffe Athletic Center, features a variety of menu choices including salads, sandwiches, smoothies,
coffee, dessert, and more.
You’ll choose one of five different meal plans.
Some of the plans have more Chowan meals; others with more Flex Dollars. When you want to eat at Chowan, you scan your ID
card at the door, and one meal will be taken off. At
the Warehouse Grille and the Hall of Fame Cafe, your ID card works like a debit card, using the Flex Dollars that you receive based on your
meal plan. Centre Bucks are accepted at the Hub Coffee House & Cafe, Subway, various pizza shops, and other restaurants in town.
What About a Car?
All students are allowed to have a car on campus.
You’ll have to buy a yearly parking permit, which lets you park in any student spot on campus. (A Centre bumper
sticker will not suffice—Public Safety officials will ticket you if you don’t have the permit.) If you decide not to bring your car, it’s okay; there are several banks, a
pharmacy, places to worship, a convenience store, and restaurants within easy walking distance.
The Time of Your Life
Centre is a challenging school, but it’s also a fun school. You’ll get to know tons of people on this small campus and have more things to do than you can possibly imagine. When you want a change of scene, Lexington is just up the road and Louisville is a short drive away.
Come "Reside" for a Night
These are some tips about residential life at Centre,
but the best way to get a feel for the campus is to
come for a visit and spend the night. You can also tour the campus, attend a class, and talk to the professors and students.
