Not adventurous enough? We also slept in the middle of a ship lounge, snuggling our backpacks for warmth, only to be awakened by a pristine sunrise over the coast of Greece. Who needs computerized phone operator when you have a wake up call like that?

We arrived in Athens with no other plans than to enjoy ourselves, which leads me to the second maxim of European backpacking: be spontaneous. Had we planned an itinerary, we probably wouldn’t have worked-in a spur of the moment day trip to the Oracle of Delphi, sunset behind the Acropolis, shopping in the street markets, and mass consumption of baklava. Oh, we also found our way into a rather international quiz tournament at the hostel, which, being the Centre students that we are, we proceeded to dominate.
