My favorite was the Map Room, the nerve center for all operations. Access to this room was tightly controlled, with only the prime minister, the cabinet, top staff, and visiting heads of state gaining clearance. A list of those authorized to enter still hangs on the door. Churchill’s own office-bedroom is next door, nightshirt neatly folded on top of the pillow.

Sunday our group spent the day on the road, stopping first in Bath and second at that place immortalized by the illustrious



Spinal Tap in their song of the same name – Stonehenge. We picked an ideal day, the sun out and the temperatures hovering around 60 degrees most of the time. Our entire stay, in fact, has been greeted with exceptionally good weather by London standards. My umbrella has only come out twice. But I’ve probably ended our good fortunes by saying as much.
