For my urban economics class, we have studied the question of why cities develop how and where they do. Obviously, studying in one of the world's most important cities has aided us and provided real life examples of urban economics in action. I've also been assigned an address to visit and research, as well as studying the neighborhood in which it resides. I was assigned the Sir John Soane Museum in the London neighborhood of Holbourn (or Holburn, depending on which map you're looking at).
Dr. Johnson did his best to assign us addresses relevant to our majors and I think he did a nice job with mine, seeing as Mr. Soane was a collector of many classical artifacts, especially in terms of architecture. He was an 18th Century architect who bequeathed his estate, his home filled with an array of classical paraphenallia, manuscripts, a vast library of old books, and many paintings, to the people of England. It's a tucked away little surprise and definitely a must see for anyone who ever comes to London. Unfortunately, I was told that I could not take photographs inside because of copyright issues. So use your imagination or try to find it online. |
