We arrived in Mumbai to decidedly warmer weather and a more comfortable atmosphere. Mumbai is a lot more Western, so it felt a little more like home. Responsible for finding our own lunch, I hit the streets with Jake, Kevin, Will, Lauren and Carlisle. The first place we considered was empty, so I quickly vetoed that. Knowing that you find the best food where the locals congregate, we opted instead for a small diner with nearly every booth filled by a man in a turban. It was here that I finally got to try roti (see Dec. 20 entry). I ordered one piece of roti, and knowing that “aloo” meant potato, I figured that aloo tomato would be a safe curry to accompany the bread. As we waited for the food, I noticed that the Indian in the next booth was scooping his curry up in little pieces of roti that he had broken off. Mimicking him, I experienced one of my favorite meals in India. The curry was delicious with just enough spice, and the roti was wonderfully soft and chewy. I hate to admit it, but roti is more delicious than naan.
