until I discovered that apparently, their idea of Mexican food seems to be limited to chips and salsa.  It seems that I see myself in the world not just as an American, but as someone who has lived in two different countries and can therefore view cultural and political issues through two distinct perspectives.

One of our professors last semester, Dr. Alfredo Enriquez, liked to tell us (in Spanish, of course) that after our stay in Mexico, our hearts would be divided – half would feel at home

 

 

there in the Yucatán, and half would remain loyal to the United States.  It is therefore not surprising that sometimes I feel a longing to be back in Mérida, like part of me is struggling to go home.  I know this sounds hokey, but it’s true:  I will forever be an American, but Mexico will always have possession of half of my heart.
