Lesson Seven: Get involved and stay informed

You see, female athletes are hard to come by in this country because much of the society is still conservative about female importance in the public sector. Since Ataturk’s reforms in the early Republic, females are encouraged to assert themselves in the work place, schools and athletic fields, but the transformation is slow.

Coach invited me to stay after official tryouts to play with the team and afterwards they welcomed me onto the team. Practices start this week and games in about a month. The familiarity of playing basketball keeps me from becoming homesick, plus I get to be the team's All-American! Most of all, I look forward to forming friendships with my teammates that hopefully transcend this season and our time on the court.
