The pubs are also popular places for families, which at first seemed odd to me. In America, a family with small children
would rarely be seen at a bar, but here it would be a common sight. The pubs are thought of as safe, social locations, and the atmosphere is quite congenial. And because they are so common and varied, it is not hard to find a place where you feel comfortable and welcomed.

I’ve found that I prefer the pub scene during the day. It is much more quiet and relaxed, and it is really fun to talk to the people that come in and out. The Irish take a great interest in foreigners and always have endless questions for Americans on a range of subjects from fashion to politics. I’ve also picked up on a lot of the local slang at the pubs. For example, “yous” is the plural or you and “crack” means a good time.

In the evenings, I try to find the places with the traditional music. It is so warm and welcoming, but also very hypnotizing. And it can be loads of fun when everyone is singing and clapping together. Of course, I don’t know the words most of the time, but I am learning.
