There was, however, also another side to my experience. Over the course of the three months, in spite of all the wonderful experiences I was having in Ireland, I came to really appreciate life in America more profoundly. The old cliché is true: sometimes you don’t miss something until it’s gone, and I certainly felt that way about all the American customs and culture that I now treasure. And, of course, it was great to see all my friends and family that I had missed also.

I definitely hope that everyone takes the opportunity to study and live in another country. It would be hard to overestimate the value of study abroad. It changes you and helps you get to know yourself better. For me, my experience in Northern Ireland has certainly been a challenge, but having met that challenge and succeeded is such a thrill and an accomplishment. I know it’s something I’ll look back on frequently with great satisfaction.
