Baseball names captains for 2007 season

As voted by their teammates, seniors Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Andy Placido (Nicholasville, Ky.) and junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) have been selected captains of the Centre College baseball team for the 2006-07 school year.

Moore is a three-time first team all-SCAC selection and three-time team MVP as voted by his teammates. The senior first baseman led the Colonels in batting average (.421), hits (59), doubles (13), home runs (4), runs batted in (42), total bases (86), slugging percentage (.614), on base percentage (.471) and putouts (268). He finished second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in batting average and owns a .418 career batting average.

Placido performed double duty for the Colonels once again last year serving as the team's starting third baseman as well as one of the team's top starting pitchers. The senior dual player hit .315 in 89 at bats while going 5-3 on the mound in 47 innings. Placido also served as a team captain during the 2005 season.

Last year Herbert became the first Centre pitcher since 2001 to be named to the all-SCAC team. An Honorable Mention selection a year ago, Herbert led the Colonels' pitching staff in earned run average (3.84), games started (9), complete games (4), innings pitched (63.1) and strikeouts (43).The junior pitcher posted the lowest ERA by a Centre pitcher since 2001. Along with Placido, Herbert was also a team tri-captain in 2005.

The Colonels return 20 players from last year's team, which finished the season 17-22 overall and 7-9 in the SCAC, just missing out on qualifying for the SCAC tournament. The team's 17 wins in 2006 tied for the fifth most wins in school history and the seven conference wins were the most since the eight wins in 1999.
