Centre travels to Greencastle, Indiana to play DePauw

The Centre College baseball team traveled to Greencastle, Indiana to play four conference games against DePauw University this past weekend. It played doubleheaders Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at Walker Field in Greencastle, Indiana. The Colonels lost the weekend games. The four games put Depauw ahead of Centre in the eastern division of the SCAC conference.

In the opening game of the series the Colonels lost 2-1. DePauw struck first, in the bottom of the fourth, when it brought in it's first run. Centre came back with it's only run of the game in the top of the six when senior Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.) doubled deep to right field to get junior Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio) across the home plate. DePauw scored in the bottom of the eighth to take the game and prevent it from going into further innings.

Junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the entire game for the Colonels. He allowed two runs off seven hits and struck five batters out.

Centre had trouble getting hits as ten of it's batters were struck out. Sophomore Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the only player to have a multiple hit game as he got good contact with the ball on two occasions.

DePauw took an early lead in the second game when it scored in the opening inning. Centre was able to tie the game in the top of the second. Sophomore Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.) drove a single down the middle to get sophomore Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) home. The game opened up in the bottom of the fourth when DePauw took the lead and scored two runs. Centre was not able to get anymore hits and DePauw finished the game when it scored it's final run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 4-1.

Senior Lance Sizmore (Batavia, Ohio) started pitching for the Colonels. He threw the first four innings before he was replaced by freshmen Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.). Sizmore allowed four runs off four hits and struck one player out. Herbert allowed only two hits as he pitched for an inning and a half.

Centre again had trouble getting contact with the ball as they only had three hits in the game.

The next day saw much of the same as Centre still had trouble hitting. DePauw took four runs in it's opening inning to put the Colonels behind 4-1 by the top of the second. Centre tried to rally but could only bring in one run before being stopped. DePauw posted one run in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the fourth to secure the win 8-2.

Senior Andy Placido (Nicholasville, Ky.) started pitching for Centre. He allowed eight runs off ten hits. He was replaced by junior Jarrod Williams (Carrollton, Ky.) in the bottom of the fourth. Williams allowed only four hits the remainder of the game.

Rosen was the only Centre player to swing the bat well. He tallied three hits throughout the game.

DePauw took the final game of the series 6-4. DePauw was first on the scoreboard again and got a man home in the bottom of the second. Centre seemed to wake up briefly was it had a short hitting steak in the top of the fifth. It brought in three runners to see it's first lead of the series. The Colonels chances for a comeback was threatened in the bottom of the inning when DePauw also scored three runs. The Colonels hung with the Tigers as they scored another run in the top of the sixth. DePauw continued to deny Centre any breathing room however, and scored two runs in the bottom of the same inning to claim the game and finish the series.

Senior Johnny Karnes (Labanon, Ohio) started the game for Centre. He allowed six hits off eight hits. He struck out two DePauw batters. Herbert again came in as relief in the bottom of the seven to finish the game. He allowed only two hits in the final two innings of the game.

Centre swung much better this game as eight players recorded hits. Freshmen Kai Leathers (Franklin, Ky.) led the group with three hits and a runner batted in. Placido had two hits in the game. Moore, Jeffers, and sophomore Derrick Shepherd (Gray Hawk, Ky.) all batted in one runner.

Centre, 11-18 (4-8 SCAC), will play Thomas Moore Tuesday, April 10 at Champions Windows Field in Florence, Ky starting at 4 pm.
